Which goal planner fits the way you plan?

A goal planner only helps if you still open it in March. Pick the one whose pages match how often you plan and how long your goals run. For a full year on paper, start with the Clever Fox PRO Weekly or the Passion Planner. For 90 days at a time, look at the Full Focus Planner or the BestSelf Self Journal.

For a plan on your phone and computer, compare the Life Goals App and Griply. With no budget, YearCompass and our Life Goals Worksheets cost nothing. Each entry on this list gives the price, how long one book lasts and who should skip the planner.

Disclosure: I build the Life Goals App and the free worksheets on this list. No seller pays for a place here, and the shop links earn me nothing.

A goal planner, also called a goal setting planner, is a paper book, a PDF or an app with pages for long-term goals, monthly and weekly steps, and progress reviews. A regular planner holds dates and tasks only.

What you will learn

Key takeaways

  • A goal planner adds goal pages, steps from the year down to this week, and a review page to a regular calendar.
  • A 90-day planner means 4 books a year, so add up 12 months before you compare prices.
  • Undated pages let you start in any month and skip a week without wasting paper.
  • Choose the format and book length first, then the 12-month cost, then the review page.
  • Prompting people to track their progress helped them reach their goals in a meta-analysis [1], so pick the planner you will open every week.
  • Not sure of your goal yet? Start with a free worksheet or YearCompass before you buy a planner.

What makes a planner a goal planner?

Any planner holds dates. I call these five parts the Five-Part Goal Planner Check. The check shows whether a planner can carry a goal from the year down to this week:

  1. Goals broken down from the year to this week: a yearly goal leads to a quarterly or monthly step, then to this week's tasks. Can you trace a daily task back to a goal?
  2. A review page: a weekly or monthly page where you write what moved and what did not.
  3. Dated or undated pages: An undated planner has pages without printed dates, so you start on any day and a skipped week wastes no pages. A dated planner has the calendar printed in, so you write less and lose the pages of a skipped week.
  4. A habit tracker is a grid where you tick each day you did a small action for your goal. The grid shows at a glance whether the weekly action happened.
  5. Help to choose the goal: some planners start before the calendar. PowerSheets has coaching questions, Passion Planner has a core values activity, and Clever Fox has a page for life goals.

Why does the review page matter?

A review page is where you write what moved and what did not. The Ramsey Monthly Reflection page asks for this month's wins, ways to improve, learnings to remember and next month's priorities.

In a 2016 meta-analysis, Harkin and colleagues found that prompting people to track their progress helped them reach their goals [1]. The analysis covered 138 experiments with 19,951 people.

How is a goal planner different from a journal?

A journal gives you open pages to write about your day. A goal planner gives you set pages for goals, steps and reviews.

How long does one book last?

A 90-day planner means 4 books a year. The cost table adds up 12 months for each planner.

The Five-Part Goal Planner Check on the Full Focus Planner

Here is the Five-Part Goal Planner Check run on the Full Focus Planner (Linen):

  1. Goals broken down: annual and quarterly goals lead to a Weekly Preview with your 3 biggest goals, then to 3 daily tasks.
  2. Review page: weekly and quarterly reviews have their own pages.
  3. Dated or undated: the pages are undated, so a skipped week wastes no pages.
  4. Habit tracker: the Goal Detail pages include visual goal and habit tracking.
  5. Help to choose the goal: the Goal Detail pages ask for your reason behind each goal.

Full Focus passes all five parts, but 4 Linen books cost $179.96 over 12 months.

How I compared these goal planners

Each fact about a planner comes from that seller's own page. I did not test the other planners. I group the planners by format and book length, and I list each group in no ranked order.

Digital goal planners for your tablet

A digital goal planner is a PDF you write on with a stylus, or an app that tracks your goals. A PDF holds only what you write, and an app adds reminders and progress charts.

On a tablet, you write on the PDF in an app such as GoodNotes. A dated PDF leaves skipped weeks empty, as a dated book does.

If you still weigh paper against a screen, the paper planner vs digital planner guide covers that choice in depth.

Over 3 years, 4 Linen planners a year cost $539.88 at the single price. A one-year book such as the Clever Fox PRO Weekly costs $119.97 over the same 3 years.

How to decide which goal planner to buy

Answer six questions, in this order:

  • Will you open paper, a tablet or your phone every week? For paper, look at Clever Fox PRO Weekly or Passion Planner. For a tablet, look at Passion Planner Digital. For a phone, look at the Life Goals App or Griply.
  • How long do your goals run? One goal in a quarter fits the BestSelf Self Journal or the Full Focus Planner. Goals for a full year fit Clever Fox PRO Weekly or Passion Planner.
  • What can you spend over 12 months? Free sheets cost $0 and a yearly book costs $39.99 to $64. Four 90-day books cost $139.96 to $179.96, as the cost table shows.
  • Which review page will you fill in every week? Clever Fox, Full Focus and BestSelf have a weekly review. Passion Planner and Ramsey have a monthly one. If you often skip weeks, choose an undated book such as Clever Fox PRO Weekly, or an app.
  • Which part of your life is the goal about? Money goals fit the 2027 Ramsey Goal Planner. Goals in several life areas fit Clever Fox PRO Weekly on paper, or an app.
  • Do you know your goal yet? If not, start with the free Life Goals Worksheets or YearCompass before you buy anything.

Then run your two finalists through the Five-Part Goal Planner Check, and put your first weekly review in your calendar.

How to set up a goal planner in your first week

These five steps work in a book, a PDF or an app. The example follows one goal through all five:

  1. Pick 1 to 3 goals for the year: give each one a number and a date. For example: "Run a 10 km race by 30 June."
  2. Break each goal into this quarter's step: for the race, "Run 5 km without stopping by 31 March".
  3. Write this week's actions on the weekly page: for the race, three runs on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.
  4. Add the habit to the tracker: tick one box for each run.
  5. Book your review time: choose one fixed slot each week, such as Sunday evening, and put it in your calendar.

At the first review, compare the 3 runs you planned with the runs you did. Then plan next week from that. For a one-page plan of a single goal, use the Outcome Map and Friction Map template.

What happens when you miss a week?

A missed week costs pages in a dated book and nothing in an undated book or an app. Sooner or later you will miss a week, so here is what to do in each format:

  • Dated paper: the empty pages stay in the book. Write a short note on the next weekly page and start again there.
  • Undated paper: you write the next date on the next page, so no page goes to waste.
  • Tablet PDF: a dated PDF leaves the skipped week empty, and an undated PDF lets you carry on from the next page.
  • App: there are no pages to waste. Look for an app that lets you take a day off without breaking your record.

After a gap, start with a review. Decide which goals you keep for the next week, then plan that week.

Ramon's Take

I plan mostly on paper. My calendar and reminders are digital, and my own system is a stack of note cards. The tool I have used longest is a physical planner or notebook.

My weak spot is the long-term review. I set too many goals, and I miss reviews when daily life gets busy. So I judge a goal planner by its review page first.

Covers, stickers and paper weight do not change whether you look at your goals in March. I do not believe one book or one app fixes planning. A planner holds only what you bring back to it each week.

If you are unsure, use free sheets for a month and buy after that.

I build the Life Goals App, so read its entry with that in mind. I wrote its limits in the same rows as everyone else's.

Conclusion: choosing your goal planner

Run your finalists through the Five-Part Goal Planner Check. Add up 12 months of cost for each. Then pick the format you will open every week.

Which planner will you still open in the first week of March?

Next 10 minutes

  • Write down 1 to 3 goals for next year, each with a number and a date.
  • Decide whether you will open paper, a tablet or your phone every week.
  • Shortlist 2 planners in that format from the comparison table.

This week

  • Add up 12 months for your 2 finalists with the cost table.
  • Check each seller's page for the current price and the return window.
  • Put a 20-minute weekly review in your calendar for the first Sunday after your planner arrives.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 90-day planner better than a yearly planner?

A 90-day planner suits one focused goal you can finish in 13 weeks, and a yearly planner suits goals in several life areas. Clever Fox sells a 13-week planner, the Ultimate Achievers, for $29.99. Four of them cost $119.96 a year, less than four BestSelf journals at $144.

Should I buy a dated or an undated goal planner?

Buy undated if you start in the middle of the year or often skip weeks, and dated if you want the calendar printed in. Clever Fox sells both kinds: the undated PRO Weekly and a dated Weekly Planner PRO for 2026 to 2027 at $38.49.

Does the Full Focus Planner have an app?

Yes, Full Focus has a free app for iPhone and Android, released in March 2026. The app offers live sessions, community discussions, and weekly and quarterly preview sessions. The app's store listing describes no digital planner pages, so the planner itself stays paper. A separate LifeScore assessment rates nine life areas with a score from 1 to 100.

Is PowerSheets being discontinued?

Yes. After Cultivate What Matters closes the shop on 31 January 2027, the PowerSheets website becomes a legacy landing page. For an undated paper planner for a full year after that date, look at Clever Fox PRO Weekly.

What is in the 2027 Ramsey Goal Planner?

The 2027 Ramsey Goal Planner has weekly and monthly calendars and stickers next to the goal pages. The monthly teachings come from Rachel Cruze, Dr. John Delony and Jade Warshaw. Ramsey released the 2027 edition on 8 September 2026.

Do goal planners work?

Goal planners help when you use them to check your progress. I found no study that tested a planner brand. A 2016 meta-analysis by Harkin and colleagues found that prompting people to track their progress helped them reach their goals [1].

What is the best free goal planner?

Choose a printable for paper and the Griply free plan for an app. YearCompass and the Life Goals Worksheets are free files to print or fill in. The Griply free plan has 2 goals, 2 habits and 5 projects. The Life Goals App free start covers your values and purpose statement with no registration.

What is the 5-4-3-2-1 goal method?

There is no single definition. The most common version sorts goals by time: 5 years, 4 months, 3 weeks, 2 days, and 1 hour or 1 day. Archer and Olive and Goals on Track both explain this version.
