Start with the app

Where do I start?

Pick the way in that fits your time.

What happens after I unlock the app?

The welcome guide runs the first time. Its first page has two buttons. Press I'm new here and step through its pages. The last page takes you to Values.

Used the app before? Press I have used the app before, then Restore from Dropbox or Load.

To see it again, open More, then Replay the welcome guide.

Do I need to do the steps in order?

Yes for your first session, because each step builds on the step before it.

Keep Vision short at first. You can come back to it after a month.

After your plan is ready, go to any step from the step row or the Jump to any screen window.

How long does it take?

Can I track habits without planning?

Yes. Open Habits. It is open from the start, so you can set up a habit before you plan your first week.

A habit that serves no goal is easier to drop, so add the planning steps when you have time.

Set up your plan

How do I pick my values?

  1. Open Values. It opens on Play your hand.
  2. Take the next card in place of any card you do not want.
  3. Open Rank your five and put the cards in order.
  4. Open Where it shows up, then press Continue to Purpose.

Pick the five you live by, not the five you think you should.

How do I write my purpose sentence?

Open Purpose. It opens on Write your purpose, with two ways to write it.

Write it in your words. It does not have to sound grand.

How do I pick my focus areas?

  1. Open Life Areas. It opens on Rate your areas.
  2. Give each area a satisfaction score and an importance score, from 1 to 10.
  3. Open Choose your focus and mark two or three areas.

Three areas is enough to carry on. You can add more later.

How do I sketch a vision?

Open Vision. It opens on Three Futures.

  1. Write three futures for the next five years, in the present tense.
  2. Press Interview with your future you if you would rather answer questions.
  3. Mark the future you want as your active vision.

The other two stay, so you can compare them later.

How do I set an annual goal from my values?

  1. Open Values and read your top five.
  2. Open Purpose and read your sentence. Which values show up in it?
  3. Open Life Areas and pick the focus area closest to your top value.
  4. Open Vision and read your active vision for that area.
  5. Open Summit Goals and write one goal for that area.
  6. Repeat for each focus area.

Write the result you want. Give it a date and a measure. If you cannot say which value the goal matches, pick another one.

What are the drafted goal and the checkpoints?

The app writes a first annual goal when a focus area has a Summit Goal but the year has none. It adds a checkpoint at the end of each quarter that is at least 60 days away. Grey text marks what is still a draft.

To make them yours, open Execute, then Year.

  1. Type over the Goal on the goal card.
  2. Open Milestones and give each checkpoint a name and a date.
  3. Press Add milestone to write another one, or the bin icon to drop one.

Late in the year no quarter end is 60 days away, so write your own on Milestones.

To stop the drafting, open Settings, then Planning, then Draft annual goals from my Summit Goals.

How do I plan from the year down to today?

Open Execute. Five buttons run across the top: Year, Quarter, Month, Week and Day.

  1. Open Year. Break each Summit Goal into annual goals with milestones that have a date.
  2. Open Quarter. Name a theme and tick the milestones for these twelve weeks.
  3. Open Week. Turn the month into three to five tasks.
  4. Open Day. Pick three tasks for today.

On your first session, fill in Year, Quarter and Week.

Set up and track habits

How do I set up a habit?

  1. Open Habits.
  2. Press New habit and type what you will do.
  3. Add the details under Habit definition.

The fields, in order:

Aim for one or two habits, not five. Doing one small thing daily beats doing many things now and then.

How do I mark habits each day?

  1. Open Habits.
  2. Press today’s mark for each habit you kept.

Each press moves the mark to the next state: Done, Lazy day, Not yet.

To fill in a day you missed, pick that day in the calendar bar.

What is a lazy day version?

The smallest version of the habit, for a day when the full one is out of reach. A day marked Done counts, and so does a day marked Lazy day.

A 30 minute run becomes a 10 minute walk. A 1,000 word session becomes 200 words. Set it low: if your lazy version is still hard, make it smaller.

It is what makes the two day rule work on a bad day.

How do I change a habit?

  1. Open Habits.
  2. Pick the habit.
  3. Change any field. The app saves as you type.

The change counts from today. The days you already marked stay as they are.

How do I delete a habit?

Make it smaller first, because a smaller habit keeps your history.

  1. Open Habits.
  2. Pick the habit.
  3. Press Delete habit and confirm.

The habit and its Year tracker go for good. The other habits stay.

When should I add another habit?

After about four weeks of keeping the ones you have. Adding more too early is how people drop them all.

Keep a daily and weekly rhythm

How do I do my daily reflection?

  1. Open Execute, then Day.
  2. Mark the habits you kept.
  3. Write one line in the reflection.
  4. Pick three tasks for tomorrow.

Five minutes is enough. On a busy day, mark the habits and close the tab.

What is the daily value line?

The Day screen shows one of your top five values, with a way to bring it into today. It changes from day to day.

In the evening you tick whether you brought that value into the day. A day you left blank counts as unanswered, not as a miss.

To switch it off, open Settings, then Appearance, then Daily value line. What you already recorded stays.

When do I plan and when do I reflect?

Both happen on the Day screen. You pick the time.

Change it in Settings, then Cadence, under Reflect on the day and Plan the day.

How do I do my weekly reflection?

  1. Open Execute, then Week.
  2. Open Review.
  3. Write one win from the week.
  4. Write one thing that slipped.
  5. Open Plan and write three to five tasks for next week.

Ten minutes on a Sunday evening is enough.

How do I mark a milestone on track or off track?

  1. Open Execute, then Month or Quarter, then Review.
  2. Find the milestone card. Under Confidence, press On track, At risk, or Off track.

Mark At risk early. A milestone left On track until its date gives you no time to act.

How do I record the result of a milestone?

  1. Open Execute, then Year.
  2. Open the milestone. On a computer, it is on the Milestones tab of the goal card.
  3. Under Status, press Achieved, Partial, or Abandoned.

Start again after a gap

What do I do after one missed day?

Open the app and pick yesterday in the calendar bar. Mark the habits you did. Skip the reflection if you cannot remember the day.

What do I do after a missed week?

Do not fill in seven days from memory.

  1. Open the app today.
  2. Write this week’s reflection as normal.
  3. Mark only the habit days you remember.
  4. Start again tomorrow with the lazy day version of each habit.

What do I do after a missed month?

  1. Skip the month check-in for that month.
  2. Write a line about the gap in your next week reflection.
  3. Mark any milestone that slipped as At risk.
  4. Start again with one habit, then add the others back one a week.

Do not try to catch up by doubling everything for two weeks. That is how people stop for good.

What happens after 90 days away?

The app shows a card with two buttons: Skip ahead, plan today, or Open Vision.

The reviews you missed are under Open reviews. Each one has Review now and Let it go.

Days you set with Mark as a break do not count toward the gap.

What happens when my streak breaks?

Current streak starts again at zero. The number under longest (all years) stays.

Start a new streak tomorrow. The reset shows you what breaks your rhythm.

Change your goals during the year

How do I change a Summit Goal during the year?

  1. Open Summit Goals.
  2. Pick the goal card.
  3. Change the words, the date or the measure.

The quarter check-in is a good moment, because it goes through each goal with you.

How do I drop a goal?

Do it in two places, because a Summit Goal and the annual goal drafted from it are separate things.

  1. Open Summit Goals and press Clear goal on that goal.
  2. Open Execute, then Year.
  3. Press Remove this annual goal and confirm.

Both are gone for good. Press Undo in the message that follows if you change your mind.

How do I add a focus area during the year?

  1. In Life Areas, on the Rate your areas tab, score the area.
  2. Open Choose your focus and mark it.
  3. Open Summit Goals and write a goal for it.

A milestone left Off track for two months makes the plan around it wrong.

Change your settings and save your plan

How do I hide one of the small lines on a planning screen?

  1. Move the pointer over the line. A cross appears at its end.
  2. Press the cross. The line goes for good.

To bring them back, open Settings, then Reminders, then Hidden hints, then Show them again.

Overdue milestones and the coming-up list have no cross, because they are the state of your plan. Change the date instead.

Your plan then goes into your own Dropbox folder after every change. It is optional and free.

How do I put my plan in my calendar?

  1. Open Settings, then Reminders, then Reminder calendar.
  2. Set the times you want for each review.
  3. Press Download calendar file.
  4. Open the file. Your calendar app takes it from there.

The events repeat. After a change, download the file again and import it over the old events.

How do I print my plan?

  1. Open the screen to print.
  2. Press Print / Save PDF.

The app builds a paper layout from your plan, then opens the print window. Pick a printer, or save as a PDF.

How do I install the app on my phone?

The installed app starts empty, so load your save file into it after you install it.

How do I back up my plan?

Keep the file where you keep your other files. The save status in the corner shows Saved on this device and Not backed up yet.

How do I move my plan to another device?

  1. Press Save on the first device.
  2. Put the file in a folder both devices can reach, or email it to yourself.
  3. Press Load on the second device and pick your file.
  4. Confirm the replacement.

You can also connect Dropbox on both devices and skip the file.

  1. Reload the page with Ctrl+Shift+R, or Cmd+Shift+R on a Mac.
  2. Try another browser.
  3. Write to support@goalsandprogress.com if it still fails.

What do I do when I lose my licence code?

Get your code again at gumroad.com/license-key-lookup with the email you bought with. Write to support@goalsandprogress.com if that does not work.
